GYNECOMASTIA

Men with excess fat or glandular tissue (or a combination of both) in the chest area may feel self-conscious. The cause of gynecomastia is unknown, but it is common among teenagers and usually disappears with puberty. There are other medical issues that can cause gynecomastia, such as hormonal imbalance, side effects of herbal remedies or medications, among others. If the excess fat is due to obesity, it is best to reduce the size as much as possible through diet and exercise.

If the problem is fat, liposuction alone may be enough to achieve the desired results. However, in some cases, breast tissue, which is denser than fat, must be surgically removed. The location of the incision varies, but may include the areola, the area under the breast, or the armpit.

Who is a candidate for gynecomastia surgery?

A healthy, weight-stable male (who has lost as much excess weight as possible), who is unhappy with the fatty appearance of the breast, such as a female breast, is indicated for the procedure.

Who is not a candidate for gynecomastia surgery?

A man who wants to use gynecomastia surgery to reduce his weight or who is in poor physical condition, taking medication or recreational drugs that can interfere with healing.

Intended results

After gynecomastia surgery, a man will have a natural chest. These results are permanent.

Description of procedure

Anesthesia, general or local, is administered. An incision is made in the areola, below the breast, or in the armpit, depending on the extent of correction needed, whether fat or tissue will be removed, and the plastic surgeon’s preference. If breast tissue is removed, it will be excised through the incision. If liposuction is used, the cannula will be inserted into the incision to remove excess fat. After reduction, the incision will be closed with sutures.

Recovery and healing

It is very important that you follow your plastic surgeon’s instructions carefully. You may experience bruising and redness in the area of the incisions for several days. Drains can be temporarily placed in the incision.
