Augmentation Mammoplasty

Breast augmentation, known as augmentation mammoplasty, can improve the body contour of a woman who is unhappy with her breast size. This procedure can also be used to improve breast volume loss after pregnancy and breastfeeding. In addition, the operation can help balance breast asymmetries.

Saline-filled or newly FDA-approved silicone gel implants can be surgically implanted by three standard routes, with placement above or below the thoracic muscle. The standard routes are: periareolar (around the areola), inframammary (lower breast folds) and transaxillary (arm cavities). In addition, saline implants can be placed transumbilically (through the navel).

The implant consists of a flexible external silicone shell filled with saline or silicone gel. The outer surface can be smooth or textured. Implants also come in a variety of sizes, profiles and shapes to suit each woman’s individual needs.

The surgery will enlarge the breasts, but it will not change the underlying basic defects in their shape and shape. Major asymmetries can be improved, but will not be completely corrected with breast augmentation alone. A noticeable difference in the size, shape or orientation of the two breasts is considered normal and is actually the norm. If asymmetries in breast size and/or nipple position are severe, additional procedures may be required to further improve symmetry.

Long-term experience with breast augmentation surgery has shown that this operation has a high rate of patient satisfaction.

Description of the procedure for breast augmentation

Breast augmentation is usually performed in an accredited outpatient surgical center under general anesthesia or conscious sedation with local anesthesia. Surgical scars are hidden in the inframammary folds, the periareolar border (the border between the areola and the normal skin of the breast), the cavities of the arms, or the navel. Saline or silicone implants can be placed above or below the pectoral muscle.
