In chin reduction surgery, incisions are made in the mouth or under the chin. The bone is carved to a more desirable size. For orthognathic surgery, the incision is made in the mouth to reposition the bones of the face.
Immediately after surgery, a bandage is applied, which remains in place for two to three days. Discomforts may occur in the postoperative period, which are controlled and minimized with prescribed medications. Chewing is limited for the first few days, requiring a soft, liquid diet for some time. There is a tense feeling of tightness post-surgical, but this goes away within a week.
After approximately six weeks, most of the swelling disappears and the results begin to be appreciated. Normal activity can be resumed in around ten days, except for the most rigorous ones, which are prohibited in the first few weeks.
