The procedure is performed using a sterile, single-handed device through which plasma energy is used in retro-application, at a speed of about 1 cm/second. Only 1 to 2% of the helium gas is ionized and turns into plasma; the gas remaining in the cavity cools the area promoting a dual thermal effect, thus providing significant skin retraction without risk of burns.
At higher temperatures, shorter treatment times can be used to achieve maximum shrinkage. At a temperature of about 65°C, the treatment time must be >=152 seconds for significant shrinkage to occur; at a temperature of 85 °C, the treatment time can be reduced to 0.044 seconds (about 3,500 times faster).
